Liposuction for Upper-Arm Contouring

Women of all sizes may experience loose, saggy skin on their upper arms that may be the result of age, pregnancy, or genetics. Regardless of how hard you may diet and exercise your triceps and biceps, droopy arms occur naturally due to the loss of skin elasticity and gravity.

Sometimes called “bingo wings” or “lunch lady arms,” limp, flabby upper arms are something many of us are plagued with. Because women tend to be weaker in the upper arms than men, our skin may be thinner and more prone to sagging. However, new and advanced cosmetic surgery treatments offer women a way to get rid of the flab.

Techniques to Battle Upper-Arm Flab

The focus on upper arms has lead to a number of modifications in cosmetic surgery procedures to give patients the appearance of toned arms. Arm lifts and liposuction are the two most common techniques used to treat this beauty affliction. If fat on your arms is the main problem, lipoplasty—also known as precision liposuction—is recommended to eliminate fat pockets and give your arms a smaller circumference. However, keep in mind that this procedure won't give you super-buff arms.

Patients may choose to undergo brachioplasty (arm lift) procedure in conjunction with liposuction to achieve the most optimum results—smooth, toned, youthful looking arms with minimum fat. A surgeon will first remove the excess fat with a tiny cannula for safe superficial lipo-sculpting. Then, the extra skin is pulled up toward the shoulder and the scar is hidden in the armpit.

Candidates for Lipoplasty

Liposuction for arm contouring may not be effective for everyone. “Lipoplasty is most suitable for younger women with good skin tone,” says Dr. Foad Nahai, President-Elect of the American Society for Aesthetic Plastic Surgery. “The main contraindication is minimal fat excess and moderate skin excess.”

Nahai adds that with patients who have lost a good amount of weight, an arm lift or skin excision is typically necessary to fully contour arms. But many patients may first want to attempt liposuction to see whether or not the results are beneficial.
