Survey Finds One In Five People in U.S. Want Cosmetic Surgery
September 26, 2006
Liposuction, breast augmentation, BOTOX, and other plastic and cosmetic surgery procedures are no longer a societal taboo, but rather something many of us wish to undergo someday.
According to the results of a new survey—conducted by the American Academy of Cosmetic Surgery (AACS)—one in five Americans hope to undergo some type of cosmetic procedure in the future.
The survey, which involved more than 1,000 interviews with women and men between the ages of 18 to 65, represented over 1.4 million households in the U.S.
Most of the survey participants who responded that they wished to someday have some type of cosmetic surgery were women, young adults, and people who live in the western part of the country.
Twelve percent of males who participated in the survey also welcomed the idea of cosmetic surgery and indicated they would undergo some type of cosmetic procedure during their lifetime.
The survey findings suggest that society has taken a significant turn since the 1960s and 70s when plastic and cosmetic surgery was hardly ever discussed, said executive vice president of the AACS Jeff Knezovich.
He notes that cosmetic surgery is now part of our everyday lives and has become “dinner table conversation. People are becoming more aware of cosmetic surgery and its benefits.”
