Plastic Surgery Increasingly Popular Among Men

There was a 44 percent increase in plastic surgeries performed on men from 2000 to 2005, according to the American Society of Plastic Surgeons.

While the increase in plastic surgeries isn't specific to males, the new numbers do speak of many men's wishes to look better and their willingness to achieve this goal through quick plastic surgery treatments that don't leave a lot of marks and require little recovery time.

“Men want to know, ‘When am I going to be really ready to go back to the office?'” said president of the ASPS and plastic surgeon Dr. Richard D'Amico.

Three Most Popular Procedures

The three most popular procedures, it turns out, were the least invasive ones, such as Botox injections, microdermabrasion, and laser hair removal.

Figures from the ASPS show that the number of Botox treatments given to men more than doubled from 2000 to 2005, with an estimated 313,519 injections. Director of the institute of Anti-Aging Research Dr. David McDaniel attributes this rise in popularity to the fact that surgeons are getting better results because of their increasing experience, and the acceptance of Botox in the mainstream.

“As a guy in the public eye you want people to think you look really good, really rested, like you're eating all your fruits and veggies,” McDaniel said. “You don't want people to think, ‘I wonder who did his Botox?'”

Liposuction and Nose Jobs

But quickie procedures aren't the only ones becoming more popular. Though more invasive procedures haven't become more popular at the same rate as Botox injections for example, they are also increasing in popularity quite rapidly.

Liposuction for men has increased 10 percent from 2004 to 2005, according to ASPS figures. The most common sites for fat removal through liposuction are the lower back, abdomen, and the upper flanks. Removal of chin fat is also becoming more popular.

Doctors say they are expecting tummy tucks and lifts to become even more popular as people who have gastric bypass surgeries performed start to lose weight and decide to tighten up loose skin.
