Plastic Surgery Popular Among College Students
College students want more than just good grades nowadays; they want cosmetic surgery. In fact, college-age Americans represent one of the fastest growing plastic surgery populations, accounting for approximately one quarter of the total cosmetic procedures performed since 1997.
Perhaps this trend is attributable to an increasingly self-conscious youth. However, the fact that plastic surgery is more widely accepted in the U.S. and across the globe probably helps.
“Plastic surgery is becoming more openly discussed and accepted by society,” said Dr. Alan Gold, a plastic surgeon in Long Island, New York.
Gold said that it's really maturity that matters. “There are some adults that are so immature I wouldn't operate on them, while a 15- or 16-year old may be very mature,” he said.
Benefits Outweigh Risks
Many young people see the benefits of plastic surgery as outweighing the risks. University of Virginia junior Jonathan Segal, who underwent ear surgery, said that his self-esteem has improved dramatically since the procedure.
“Before, I used to think of myself as mediocre to poor looking. Afterwards, I just felt so good about myself. I felt more comfortable dating, and people kept telling me how great I looked,” Segal said.
Casey Wiggingtons, a freshman at Purdue University, seems to agree. She had a breast augmentation and like Segal, said she would recommend plastic surgery to others.
“I love my results. I would definitely do it again. I would recommend having plastic surgery to some people. I believe some personalities take to extreme and may choose to have it for the wrong reasons. In my case, it helped my self-esteem drastically,” she said.
In addition to breast augmentation, other procedures that are popular among college-age Americans include tummy tucks, nose jobs, and liposuction.
