Surgeon's Scalpel Helps Make 60 the New 40

Middle age isn't what it used to be, thanks to a little help from innovations in cosmetic surgery. From Botox to liposuction, cosmetic surgery is changing the way people look and feel about themselves. The ultimate effect: Rapidly shifting perceptions as to what constitutes middle age.

According to a new study conducted by global research group AC Nielsen, 60 percent of Americans – the world's largest consumers of plastic surgery and anti-aging skin treatments – regard 60 as the new 40.

“Our forties are being celebrated as the decade where we can be comfortable and confident in both personal and financial terms,” said president of AC Nielsen Europe, Frank Martell.

A Global Phenomenon

This phenomenon, however, is not unique to Americans. Globally, 60 percent of people regard their forties as the new thirties.

“The majority of global consumers really believe life starts at 40,” said Martell.

Healthy eating habits, increased longevity, and greater disposable income have all contributed to this phenomenon. But the most significant boost for this drastic shift in perception of middle age comes from cosmetic surgery.

“Cosmetic surgery has become more acceptable and financially it's become affordable. Our mothers might have gone to Tupperware parties but this generation is more likely to be invited to Botox parties,” he said.

Cosmetic Surgery Widely Accepted

The global stigma surrounding cosmetic surgery is indeed waning. The survey found that 48 percent of Russians would consider having a cosmetic procedure to preserve their appearance compared with 33 percent of Irish consumers, 28 percent of Portuguese and Italians, and 25 percent of American, French and British consumers.

In America, Botox is virtually considered mainstream. Martell believes liposuction is next in line to assume mainstream status.

“Lunchtime ‘lipo' is likely to become the next cosmetic ‘special' on the menu,” he said.

Liposuction was the most sought after procedure last year in the United States. If you are considering liposuction, please contact us to learn more about your options or to locate a board certified plastic surgeon near you.
