Skepticism About New Laser Treatment
More and more Americans reportedly desire a new liposuction technique that many are questioning.
Skeptics claim that this new system, which is more expensive than traditional liposuction, may not work nay better.
Technique Details
Smartlipo was introduced in the United States a little more than a year ago and is a technique that uses a laser to melt fat before it’s drawn out of the body.
According to Cynosure Inc., who markets the system, several thousand Americans have received liposuction using the Smartlipo technique.
The Smartlipo Debate
Some cosmetic surgeons say that Smartlipo isn’t any more beneficial or effective than tumescent liposuction, which is the medical standard for this type of body sculpting.
Both procedures supposedly require local anesthesia and enable the patient to return to their normal activities within days.
However, Smartlipo can cost hundreds or even thousands of dollars more than the original technique.
“Smartlipo is a marketing gimmick to get people through the door,” explains William P. Coleman III, editor of the monthly journal of the American Society for Dermatologic Surgery.
