Seniors Paying More to Stay Young

Senior citizens are paying more for a little help looking young, according to a poll conducted by the American Association of Retired Persons (AARP).

About 800 baby boomers were polled and virtually all of them claimed they had plans to make substantial changes to their lives. The one change they most commonly wanted to make was that they wanted to take better care of themselves.

Poll Results

Many seniors said they wanted to improve their general fitness. They are spending increasing amounts of money on weights, resistance bands, physical therapists, exercise balls, and fitness classes such as those specializing in yoga or Pilates.

In response, many gyms are adding low-impact fitness classes that emphasize balance and range of motion.

Paying for Youth

Many also said they wanted to have cosmetic surgery procedures performed to help them look younger, but with new, cheaper and easier procedures, that are available, they’re shying away from some of the more drastic ones, such as face lifts. Face-lifts are down 20 percent since 2000.

“I can do a lot to maintain that youthful look without resorting to a formal face-lift,” said Dr. Richard A. D’Amico, American Society of Plastic Surgeons president-elect. “Boomers are starting the process earlier, and they are careful about scheduling the necessary regular maintenance.”

Liposuction on the Rise

Approximately 324,000 Americans opted for liposuction – which has been steadily increasing in popularity – in 2005. The areas commonly treated included the arms, legs, necks, face, and abdomen.

The recent advances in liposuction have opened the doors for many who would not have it before. Newer procedures have cut down on pain, and have shorter recovery times. The risks are lower these days, and fat cannot return where there are no fat cells to store it.
