Survey: Patients Need More Information Before Surgery

A survey conducted by the American Society of Plastic Surgeons (ASPS) found that although eight of 10 plastic surgery recipients are satisfied with their surgery, nearly four out of 10 believe they should have informed themselves more about the potential complications and side effects of their procedures before they underwent them.

The findings suggest that the patients would have been more satisfied with their surgical experiences if they had been better informed.

The Findings

Before their procedures, 91 percent of cosmetic surgery patients claimed they knew what to expect. But less than half remembered being informed of several of the common complications and side effects. Of those surveyed, 42 percent said they don’t remember being told about possible nausea and vomiting and 48 percent didn’t remember discussion of bleeding. Other side effects and possible consequences they often didn’t remember discussing include blood clots (34 percent), time away from work (27 percent), and decreased energy levels (32 percent).

Patients Don’t Ask Enough Questions

The survey revealed a disturbing lack of questioning on the part of patients. Listed below are some of the shocking findings:

· Nearly one-third (28 percent) of cosmetic plastic surgery patients failed to check their plastic surgeon’s credentials.
· 37 percent of patients failed to find out if their plastic surgeon was board-certified
· 54 percent failed to find out if their plastic surgeon completed an accredited plastic surgery residency training program

“While it is encouraging that most patients surveyed were pleased with the outcome of their surgery, the findings stress the continued need for patients to do their homework,” said Roxanne Guy, MD, ASPS president. “You can afford to be nonchalant about some things, but surgery is not one of them.”

Dr. Guy continued to say, “The study suggests patients are not as aware as they should be when it comes to understanding possible side effects and complications after surgery. Patients need to take a proactive role in their surgical experience…”
