Micro Liposuction Targets Tiny Problem Areas
Many women have elected to undergo traditional liposuction procedures to streamline large areas of body fat including the hips, abdomen, and buttocks. Now, a more advanced liposuction technique often referred to as selective, precision or micro liposuction, can help tweak those smaller areas of fat to achieve a designer body.
According to the American Society for Aesthetic Plastic Surgeons, liposuction procedures were the most popular cosmetic surgery in 2005. However, once predominately performed to remove fat from the average American, liposuction is now utilized to enhance almost perfect body parts of physically fit patients.
Perfection Through Precision
More and more women are turning to micro liposuction to banish back fat, bra fat, ankle fat, and knee fat to achieve perfection. “This is mostly for people who do not need much work done,” said Dr. Luiz S. Toledo, the plastic surgeon who taught micro liposuction to American surgeons. “It's liposuction for skinny people.”
While a few dozen experienced plastic surgeons have been performing micro liposuction for over a decade, hundreds of other surgeons are adding it to the list of procedures they perform because of its advancements and popularity.
“Because our equipment has gotten better, surgeons who a few years ago would not have touched areas like kneecaps, inner thighs, back rolls, calves, and ankles have extended their practices,” said Dr. Peter B. Fodor, a Los Angeles plastic surgeon.
Micro Liposuction Tools and Techniques
Modern ultrasound technology helps to break up the fat in smaller body parts prior to extraction, and thinner cannulae—hollow tubes used to suck out the fat—have allowed plastic surgeons to fine-tune micro-liposuction.
During the procedure, patients are anesthetized and their fat cells are vacuumed out of the body with a tube injected into the skin. Procedures targeting smaller problems areas are technically and aesthetically more challenging, said Fodor, because they don't contain as much fat.
According to an article published in the journal Dermatologic Surgery, patients want to banish “buffalo hump” (upper back), “wings” (bra fat), “doughnut” (belly button fat), “muffin top” lower back fat, “piano legs” (calves), “banana fold” (below the buttocks), and the “chubb” (knee fat).
Micro liposuction is attracting body-conscious patients who want to enhance their physiques that are already toned by diet and exercise. Because of the possible risks and complications of liposuction, it is important to use only a qualified board certified plastic surgeon by the American Board of Plastic Surgeons.
