Liposuction Alternative in Clinical Trial
Lipodissolve, also known as lipolysis, has been approved by the FDA for a clinical trial to be conducted by the ASERF. Lipodissolve is said to have the ability to dissolve fat through injection. To date, the only proved method for the removal of fat through plastic surgery has been liposuction.
The goal of the study is to help lay to rest contentions from some surgeons who are concerned about lipodissolve because too little is known about the mechanisms of action behind the ingredients contained in lipodissolve. The study will involve twenty participants to help determine the safety, effectiveness and possible side effects that may be associated with lipodissolve.
Study participants will be injected with lipodissolve in the lower abdomen up to four times, with an eight week waiting period between each session. In order to identify markers for side effects and understand more about how the medication travels, study participants will be subject to a variety of tests.
Blood samples will be taken from participants to identify signs of inflammation or adipokines, including lipid profile, plasma, glucose and insulin. Adipokines is a group of proteins that have the ability to produce perceptive and responsive cell actions. These proteins are called cytokines. Among providing numerous functions, cytokines assist with development, tissue repair, and immunity.
Through evaluation for adipokines, surgeons will be able to identify characteristics for tissue necrosis. Adipose tissue biopsies will be taken evaluate gene make up. Adipose tissue is connective tissue that acts as a crucial endocrine organ by producing hormones. Biopsies will be compared between the treated and untreated area.
In addition, MRI’s will be given to identify thickness and volume of intraabdominal fat and subcutaneous fat. If evident, scarring and granuloma formation will be able to be identified. Finally, DEXA testing will be performed to test body fat.
While the ASERF study will represent only small illustration of truth behind lipodissolve, it should increase awareness about the safety and efficacy of lipolysis.
