Liposuction Gains Popularity with Brits

Liposuction is already the most popular cosmetic surgical procedure in the United States, with more than 450,000 procedures performed in 2005 alone. Now, the procedure is gaining popularity in other countries as well.

The British Association of Aesthetic Plastic Surgeons recently released 2006 statistics listing the most popular cosmetic procedures. Breast augmentation topped the list, but liposuction jumped to third most popular with a 90 percent increase from the previous year.

Why So Popular?

"I attribute at least some of this trend to the continued media coverage which provides the public with an idea of what surgical procedures can achieve, as well as technological advances that improve safety and reduce costs," said Douglas McGeorge, president of the BAAPS.

According to McGeorge, this increase also reflects a growing acceptance of cosmetic surgery—especially of body contouring procedures.

Exercising Caution

However, plastic surgeons are quick to point out that liposuction is not a weight loss or obesity treatment but is intended for patients at or near their ideal body weight.

Additionally, patients considering liposuction should exercise caution when choosing a plastic surgeon.

"When considering cosmetic surgery, it is essential to be selective in choosing the right surgeon as the results of good surgery may be long lasting but no procedure is without some risk," said Dr. Rajiv Grover.

"When performed under the right circumstances, aesthetic surgery can have a very positive psychological impact and improve quality of life," he added.
