The Mass Appeal of Liposuction
A recent study that surveyed the amount of people who would consider plastic surgery if money was no object found surprising results.
David Frederick, a psychology graduate student from the University of California Los Angeles conducted the plastic surgery study that is published in this month’s Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery.
Study Questions Surgery
When Frederick asked the over 52, 000 participants of the study whether or not they would get plastic surgery if money was no object, 71 percent of women and 40 percent of men said they would be interested.
"Interest in cosmetic surgery is far more widespread than we had anticipated," Frederick explained. "We know there is tremendous pressure for women to be thin and have a certain appearance, and for men to be fit and muscular, but I would not have guessed that so many people would be interested in surgical body alteration."
The Cosmetic Surgery and Liposuction Breakdown
The study showed that 48 percent of women and 23 percent of men would consider getting liposuction or some form of cosmetic surgery if they could afford it.
Frederick also discovered that more women showed interest in cosmetic surgery and/or liposuction than men.
He also noted that there were several participants who weren’t overweight who showed interest in liposuction, which led him to conclude that there is an "unhealthy preoccupation with thinness."
