Liposuction News
Laser Liposuction is Wave of the Future
For years now, cosmetic surgeons have used lasers for hair removal, skin resurfacing, and to remove brown spots. Lasers are now being used to zap fat.
These lasers used in newer liposuction procedures, liquefy fat cells through a tiny incision. The fat cells are excised in some areas, or left inside to be reabsorbed by the body.
Increasing Popularity
Laser liposuction, or laser-assisted lipolysis could become extremely popular among those seeking to remove fat. Traditional liposuction is already the most common cosmetic surgery performed in the United States. More than 400,000 were performed last year, according to the American Society for Aesthetic Plastic Surgery.
“I see lipo going through the roof, becoming even more popular,” said cosmetic surgeon Robert Golkin, who has used a Smartlipo laser that was recently approved by the Food and Drug Administration on more than 50 patients.
Another plastic surgeon, Neil Sadick, who has performed nearly two dozen laser liposuction procedures over the last six months, said, “it’s the next generation of liposuction with better results and less trauma to the body.”
The Benefits
Laser liposuction is less invasive than traditional liposuction. It is also performed under oral sedation or local anesthesia and leaves less bruising and causes almost no pain. Normal activities can usually be resumed within two days.
“You’re using the laser to rupture the fat cells, like bursting bubbles,” said Golkin. For smaller areas, the melted fat cells are left in the body to be reabsorbed, but in larger areas, the fat is suctioned out.
Sadick, who is also president of the Cosmetic Surgery Foundation said, “There’s immediate tightening, because the body’s response to the heating induces new collagen formation.”
The cost of laser liposuction is comparable to that of traditional liposuction.
