Liposuction, Other Procedures Popular With Katrina Survivors
Plastic surgeons in New Orleans and throughout the region are reporting an unexpected boom in cosmetic procedures, particularly liposuction, Botox, and breast augmentation, among Hurricane Katrina survivors.
Some plastic surgeons think the boom is largely due to a need for self-renewal after such devastation and destruction. Those who weathered the storm are looking to make a fresh start, to feel better amid the bleakness.
Vita Elmer, a resident of New Orleans who was just two weeks away from moving into her newly renovated family home, started getting Botox injections after the storm. She said that even though Botox lasts only about three months, they provide her with a “temporary pick-me-up.”
“I sort of feel like I need something to make me feel good – nothing invasive, just these little things,” she said. “There is so much devastation. Everything around you looks so bad. With so much negativity, this is a little bit of a positive.”
One plastic surgeon said she had a patient who opted for liposuction in the wake of Katrina. The patient, who had lost everything during the flooding, reasoned that if she was going to have to replace her wardrobe anyway, she may as well do it in a smaller size.
