Blasting Fat Without Surgery

While conventional liposuction procedures are one of the most popular cosmetic surgeries in the country, more and more patients are opting to undergo less invasive methods that carry fewer risks and little recovery time. Two non-surgical liposuction alternatives, which use laser and ultrasound technology are currently involved in FDA trials and may soon be available for patients who want to blast fat without surgery.

How is “Laser Lipo” Different

UltraShape and LipoSonix both utilize lasers to melt fat in smaller problem areas such as the knees or beneath the chin. Often referred to as “Laser Lipo,” the procedure is designed to dissolve fat cells with the light energy from the laser. A small red beam of light on the tip of the probe allows doctors to visualize where the laser is going and point it directly at the fat cells in the treatment area.

Laser Lipo is not as invasive as the traditional method of liposuction that suctions fat with a cannula. The procedure can be performed with local anesthesia and there is reportedly less potential for scarring or burning—common risks linked to ultrasound-assisted liposuction. Patients should also spend at least one day to recover from the slight swelling and bruising.

Bottom Line

Currently, researchers are investigating the metabolic consequences of dissolved fat in the body that does not get suctioned out (as with conventional liposuction). Plastic surgeons also note that instead of just blasting fat, surgical liposuction procedures sculpt the body offering more precision and a more effective way to battle stubborn fat deposits. But for those who would rather undergo non-surgical liposuction, stay tuned…
