Liposuction Provides Relief From Excessive Sweating
People who suffer from a rare condition known as hyperhidrosis, marked by excessive sweating of the hands, feet, and underarms, have a new, if unexpected, treatment option liposuction.
Hyperhydrosis is a condition that's difficult to control. Theresa Glover, a patient who recently underwent the innovative procedure, said that even prescription-strength deodorants failed to help her manage her excessive underarm sweating.
I always sweat through all my clothes, and so I found out I can actually change that, and I really wanted to do it, she said.
The Procedure
The innovative procedure is minimally invasive and can be performed on anyone who suffers from excessive underarm sweating. Other treatments, like Botox, can be performed to control sweating in other areas.
The problem with Botox is you have to redo it every six months. So under the arm and the armpit, Botox works, too, but in addition to that you now have a new technique a liposuction removal of the sweat glands, said Dr. Neils Krejci-Papa of Boston University's Center for Cosmetic and Laser Surgery.
According to Dr. Krejci-Papa, liposuction to remove the sweat glands under the arms is a permanent, one-time procedure that results in a significant reduction in underarm sweating.
Liposuction for hyperhidrosis also carries reduced risks compared with traditional liposuction procedures because it does not require general anesthesia and uses smaller instruments.
The procedure costs approximately $3,500 and is generally not covered by medical insurance.
