Study Puts Combined Surgery Myth to Rest

As plastic surgery becomes more desired and common throughout the world, many patients want to have more than one operation performed at one time to lessen recovery time and minimize costs.

Until now, the safety of getting liposuction and a tummy tuck, the most common of the double surgeries requested, has been questioned.

One state even banned the tummy tuck and liposuction combination due to concern that it was too dangerous of an operation.

The Study

Dr. Grant Stevens, Medical Director of Marina Plastic Surgery Associates, and four colleagues decided to research the safety issues surrounding getting two surgeries done at one time.

Dr. Stevens and the other researchers conducted a clinical study of 406 abdominoplasty patients over an extended period of time. Of these patients, 57 did not simultaneously have liposuction and the remaining did.

When Dr. Stevens and his partners analyzed the data regarding the 406 patients they concluded that there is no indications of risks associated with combining tummy tuck with liposuction.

“We noted no statistically significant differences between any of the patient groups, in fact, no major complications occurred at all and no patients required hospitalization,” says Dr. Stevens.

No Risks When Patient Safety is High Priority

During their study Dr. Stevens and his colleagues were careful to always take into account the safety of the patient.

They kept the procedure time short in order to preserve blood flow and insisted that the patient’s walk as much as possible after surgery.

“This study has demonstrated that with appropriate patient care, the safety of the abdominoplasty combined with liposuction is the equivalent of the abdominoplasty alone” explains Dr. Stevens.
