Concerns Over Liposuction for Childhood Obesity
Childhood obesity is a rapidly growing problem among America's youth. Some families have begun turning to liposuction to help their children lose weight. According to a recent statement by the American Society for Aesthetic Plastic Surgery, however, liposuction is not a cure for obesity at any age.
Liposuction is best for eliminating small pockets of fat – typically in the abdomen, hip, and thigh areas – that don't respond well to diet and exercise. Consequently, the best candidates for liposuction are individuals who are already close to their ideal body weight.
Plastic Surgery for Teens
Many plastic surgeons are willing to perform certain procedures on healthy younger patients in cases where the surgery will have a positive impact – physically and psychologically.
Parents who are considering plastic surgery for their teens should consider the following ASAPS guidelines:
- Make sure you and your child fully understand the risks and benefits of the procedure
- Make sure that your child has reached the appropriate physical maturity so that later development won't negate the benefits
- Consider your child's emotional maturity. Does your child have realistic expectations?
- Check the surgeon's credentials. Is the plastic surgeon board certified by the American Board of Plastic Surgery? Is the surgical facility where the procedure will be performed properly accredited?
