Getting Plastic Surgery After Bariatric Surgery

The American Society of Plastic Surgeons (ASPS) states that plastic surgery can have a positive impact on a patient's physical appearance and self-esteem after bariatric surgery, a procedure often sought to treat morbid obesity.

Some experts believe bariatric surgery is the most prevalent major surgery in the U.S. today. However, less than 15% of patients are returning to the operating room for the suggested follow up plastic surgery.

Benefits of Plastic Surgery

The benefits of receiving bariatric surgery for those battling severe weight problems are virtually endless.

“This is a serious surgery that may involve multiple procedures performed over many months, significant recovery time and a fiscal commitment; however, the benefits are incredibly positive,” says ASPS chair of the Post Bariatric Task Force and MD, Peter Rubin.

After receiving bariatric surgery, most patients acquire excess skin that if left untreated, can lead to chronic infections, cause psychosocial health related issues and be physically restraining.

“Removing excess skin is not only necessary to achieve optimal body shape, but it’s also helpful in improving overall health and quality of life,” Rubin states.

Maintaining Health and Body Shape After Surgery

Because of the obvious benefits of bariatric surgery, an increasing number of patients are opting to enhance their overall health and lifestyle and are going under the knife. The ASPS, known as the world’s largest organization of board-certified plastic surgeons, recommends body contouring for patients who undergo bariatric surgery.

The society suggests the following guidelines for those looking to achieve their ideal body:

  • Maintain a stable weight for three consecutive months
  • Be as close to goal weight as possible
  • Have a surgery plan with your plastic surgeon
  • Ensure nutrition intake is adequate
  • Have a good diet and exercise routine
  • Have realistic expectations
