ASAPS Issues Guidelines for Safe Liposuction Procedures
Since liposuction was first introduced in 1980, it has quickly taken first place as the most popular cosmetic surgery procedure in the United States. An invasive surgery used to remove pockets of fat from the abdomen, buttocks, hips, and thighs, there are now more advanced, streamlined liposuction procedures that offer patients the opportunity to sculpt and define their figures.
Liposculpture, also called selective, precision, or micro liposuction, is a growing trend in cosmetic surgery that allows for the removal of fat from smaller body parts to enhance or accentuate features on patients who are at a normal body weight. Liposculpture targets such areas as the knees, ankles, upper back, neck, face, and other problem areas.
While traditional liposuction and liposculpture procedures are extremely popular and pose relatively few risks, the American Society for Aesthetic Plastic Surgery, at their annual meeting, have issued new guidelines for patients seeking these surgeries:
Don't pick a plastic surgeon based on the price of the procedure. You should only consult with surgeons that are board certified by the American Board of Plastic Surgery.
Have realistic expectations about the outcome of your liposuction or liposculpture procedure.
Be fully aware of all the benefits and risks associated with liposuction when considering the procedure.
Reveal to your plastic surgeon all medical conditions you may have as well as any medications you are taking whether prescription or non-prescription.
All cosmetic and plastic surgery procedures should be performed in licensed, accredited surgical facilities with only sterile equipment.
