It’s not Just American Males Getting Liposuction

In the United States, there were 53,263 liposuction procedures and more than 130,000 plastic surgeries total performed on men.

But it’s not just American men who are paying visits to plastic surgeons. Statistics by the British Association of Aesthetic Plastic Surgeons reveal that there has been a 280 percent increase in the number of liposuction procedures performed on men in the past two years in the U.K.

Matching Ideals

British men are following the example set by hundreds of thousands of women around the world who have opted to vacuum out their excess fat.

Experts think that the trend has been spurred by the combination of an increased preoccupation with body image and an increased availability and awareness of plastic surgery.

“Men are catching up with women in everything, from the way they dress and smell, to a willingness to have procedures like this done,” said British plastic surgeon Adrian Richards.

“Everyone has a bit of their body they would change in an ideal world, and now more men are realizing they have the power to do exactly that.”

A Sharp Increase in Liposuction

Richards said that he has personally seen the number of male liposuction patients in his own clinic double in the last year. The abdomen, chest, flanks, neck and chin were the most commonly treated areas.

Dalia Nield, another cosmetic surgeon said that she has also noticed a considerable rise in the number of men opting for liposuction.

“These men have been living with unwanted fat for years and years,” said Nield. “If you feel like you have the hips of a hippopotamus, this can make a big difference to your life. Liposuction is a liberation for these people. They’re able to wear T-shirts and take them off at the beach without being self-conscious.”
